  • Alaska Native Heritage Center

    An educational and cultural institution for all Alaskans, the Alaska Native Heritage Center provides programs in both academic and informal settings.

  • Alaska Native Knowledge Network

    A resource for compiling and exchanging information related to Alaska Native knowledge systems and ways of knowing. There are activities, newsletters, teacher guides, etc.

    The children's book award was created as a way to identify and honor the very best writing and illustrations by and about American Indians. Awards given for picture book, middle school and young adult.

  • American Indians in Children's Literature

    Blog written by Debbie Reese (Nambe Pueblo) who reviews and discusses books written by Native authors that provides children with accurate information about American Indians.

    Children's author Cynthia Leitich Smith (Muscogee Creek) has an excellent website with extensive information on Native children's authors and literature.

  • First Alaskans literacy project

    In 2004, the Alaska Native Policy Center at First Alaskans Institute developed a research project to identify Pre-K through 3rd Grade literacy programs operating throughout Alaska.

  • H.A.I.L.: Honoring Alaska's Indigenous Literature

    The Alaska Native Knowledge Network houses and maintains this website which offers critical evaluations of books that portray Alaska Natives and other indigenous peoples.

  • If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything

    Program developed by Loriene Roy to assist the libraries serving Native American children in increasing reading skills while preserving Native identity through a family literacy program. 

  • Oyate

    Publisher and reviewer of books about Native Americans, particularly those aimed at schoolchildren. Oyate publishs Broken Flute, an excellent resource that evaluates children's and young adult books. There are also other resources on evaluating books, books to avoid and FAQ's.

    A landmark series series produced by American Experience in association with Native American Public Telecommunications for WGBH Boston. The Event Kit for Libraries contains many great ideas for related library and school programming.   Download the 28-page library event kit, for free, at www.pbs.org/weshallremain/libraries. Included are Guidelines for Evaluating Media about Native Peoples and a discussion on exploring stereotypes.

  • Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library

    A project of the Public Library Association and the Association of Library Service to Children that offers research reports, workshop materials, and toolkits to libraries for disseminating early literacy information to parents, educators, and political leaders.

  • International Reading Association (IRA)

    Nonprofit association dedicated to promoting literacy worldwide. Includes a robust Resources section featuring links to lessons plans and booklists.

    Information resource on reading, teaching, and tutoring techniques. Includes sections on reading aloud and suggestions for parents.

  • People of Color Picture Books Project

    This wiki is meant for childcare workers, librarians, teachers and parents interested in reading and sharing picture books where people of color are featured prominently. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all people of color books. Rather, emphasis is placed on finding stories especially appropriate to share with groups of children, five years of age and younger, where people of color characters are shown in contemporary settings.

  • Asian American Curriculum Project

    Nonprofit publisher of books for "all age groups, all levels of education and all Asian ethnic groups; including and not limited to Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Samoan, Tongan, Thai, & Vietnamese Americans and Hawaiians.   • National Book Development Council of Singapore
